How are (Flemish) SMEs experiencing the financial crisis? ?
As the previous information shows, the financial crisis is expressed via several macro-economic indicators and the first signs are appearing in the real economy. An on-line survey, conducted at the beginning of October by UNIZO (Flemish Union of the Self-Employed) enables us to look a little further into the question. The purpose of the survey was to probe the perceptions of and the expectations from the financial crisis in respect of 615 Flemish entrepreneurs. 90.2% of the entrepreneurs questioned employ 50 people at most and 50.6% of the people questioned employ 1 to 5 people; the survey therefore enables reliable conclusions to be drawn with regard to SME profiles.
In this survey, 33.3% of the entrepreneurs were temporarily observing a hardening of their bank's credit policy and 66.2% were expecting that, in the short- or long-term, credit would be granted less easily to them.
The survey also questioned the entrepreneurs on the broader impact of the financial crisis on their companies. 54.6% of those questioned thought that the financial crisis was having a negative impact on their businesses and 84.4% were expecting a negative impact in the future, near or not.
